Here's a nice article that appeared recently in the Los Angeles Times, after our presentation at the Laguna Beach Library.

Rogue One Screening for Boys & Girls Club of LA

It was great to be a part of this event for the Boys & Girls Club of LA. Love seeing the looks on the gracious kids' faces in the video (link below) as they watch the fake movie trailer. The kids even got T-shirts! So fun to see them getting Hollywood star treatment. Good work, Charles Schwab!

Children's Hospital LA visit

We were honored to be a part of this wonderful day-long holiday visit to hand out toys to kids at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, sponsored by Duracell. Kids received light sabers while surprised and excited staff were given Chewbacca masks. At day's end, kids, R2-D2 and Jedi representing the Light Side battled with Darth Vader and stormtroopers from the Dark Side on the pedestrian bridge out front.

Some favorite things said to R2 while visiting patients:

"He's real, I knew it!"

"I'm ready to battle the dark side. I'm going to be a Jedi knight. Bye C3PO!"

Here's some video recaps of the day:

Laguna Beach Library

We had a standing-room-only crowd at the Laguna Beach Library, where for the first time BB-8 joined R2-D2 while Mike shared photos and stories from the 2015 build and BB-8's first outings. As usual, audience members of all ages were kept entertained by the presentation and asked insightful questions.

Stan Lee's LA Comic Con 2016

We brought WALL•E, Eve and BB-8 to this year's convention to be a part of an expanded Robot Alley alongside the R2 Builders Club. We enjoyed having more space to move the robots around near the stage. Every year the number of robots grows!

Star Wars Reads Day at San Clemente Library

We brought R2 to the San Clemente Library to help with Star Wars Reads Day. After giving a presentation on building R2, and letting guests take photos with R2 and members of the Saber Guild, Mike read a book about droids with help from R2 and a Jedi. The library staff had prepared some very creative crafts and post-it note murals. We love inspiring young minds to read and create!

R2LA 13

This year's gathering of R2 Builders drew twice the number of guests as years past, requiring a larger party venue. So we constructed a 40' sunshade to block 90% UV across the backyard, which really helped with temps in the mid-90s. Attendance topped out over 140. Friday night's pizza dinner brought about 50 people. Everyone had a great time meeting and reconnecting with each other and sharing project ideas.

We had builders from all corners of the country and places in between. Everyone brought parts and props to display, and we had more than 30 finished droids. Gordon Tarpley filmed aerial shots with his drone, and brought his Robot Chicken-created puppet to meet those of Michael McMaster and Mike Senna. There was a resin demo and Senna disassembled his BB-8 for a large, interested crowd.

There was an R2 made of Tinkertoy K'NEX, two Choppers (from Star Wars Rebels animated TV show), and four BB-8s. Also a full-size Star Wars video arcade machine, a full-size Tauntaun head, and screen-used costumes and props from the classic Sci-fi film Logan's Run from Brian Mix.

San Diego Comic Con 2016

It was an honor to be a part of the R2 Builders panel at San Diego Comic Con, expertly organized by Thomas Roeoesli of San Diego. About 250 audience members packed the house to hear panelists Victor Franco, Thomas Roeoesli, William Miyamoto, Michael McMaster, Chris Romines, Mike Senna and special guest Lee Towersey from the UK.

We left BB-8 with friends at the Anovos booth during the con.
