Don Bies gave an interesting presentation at the Academy Museum in LA, as part of their Building Character series. He shared stories, photos and videos from his years building props for Lucasfilm and ILM. It was an honor to be a part of the event, and to get a personal tour of the Kenny Baker R2 unit on display in the museum, which Don built. Several members of the R2 Builders Club were in the audience.
We only had about an hour to see the fairly new museum, which is worth a visit. We need to go back again sometime to see what we missed. The exhibits include a lot of video footage which is updated regularly to keep things fresh. Their education center offers classes for the public, including many school field trips.
